Mechanically Processing Cottonseed to Reduce Gossypol and Aflatoxin Levels
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cottonseed is an economical source of protein and is commonly used in balancing livestock rations; however, its use is typically limited by protein level, fat content, gossypol, and the potential for aflatoxin contamination. There are numerous studies in the literature discussing gossypol and aflatoxin toxicities in livestock and processing methods for reducing gossypol levels in cottonseed. However, there is very limited information in the literature within the last 30 years on how aflatoxin is affected by processing. Evaluation studies were conducted to determine if an extrusion process affected gossypol and aflatoxin levels in cottonseed without negatively impacting the nutritional value of the product, and if these reductions were consistent with the literature. Results from the gossypol study showed a 71 to 78% decrease in free gossypol levels due to the extrusion process, which were lower than some reported methods of processing and consistent with others. Results from the aflatoxin studies showed reductions of 50% when the

Update on the Impact of Dry Extruding Cottonseed to Reduce Aflatoxin and Gossypol Levels
Cottonseed is an economical source of protein and is commonly used in balancing livestock rations; however, its use is typically limited by protein level, fat content, gossypol, and the potential for aflatoxin. Cottonseed and mixtures of cottonseed and cotton gin by-products (CGBP) were extruded at relatively high temperatures to determine if the process would reduce the free-gossypol and aflat...
متن کاملEngineering cottonseed for use in human nutrition by tissue-specific reduction of toxic gossypol.
Global cottonseed production can potentially provide the protein requirements for half a billion people per year; however, it is woefully underutilized because of the presence of toxic gossypol within seed glands. Therefore, elimination of gossypol from cottonseed has been a long-standing goal of geneticists. Attempts were made to meet this objective by developing so-called "glandless cotton" i...
متن کاملGossypol Toxicity from Cottonseed Products
Gossypol is a phenolic compound produced by pigment glands in cotton stems, leaves, seeds, and flower buds (Gossypium spp.). Cottonseed meal is a by-product of cotton that is used for animal feeding because it is rich in oil and proteins. However, gossypol toxicity limits cottonseed use in animal feed. High concentrations of free gossypol may be responsible for acute clinical signs of gossypol ...
متن کاملGossypol Effects in Animal Feeding Can Be Controlled
Gossypol, a substance found naturally in cottonseed and cottonseed products has been the subject of numerous research projects and articles in the past. However, controlling gossypol intake is still a concern in many livestock classes. This review article includes a summary of the classical information on limits and effects as well as results from recent research projects with immature and adul...
متن کاملFeeding cotton products to cattle.
Despite the potential for gossypol toxicosis (particularly in pre-ruminants) and risk factors associated with impaired fertility in bulls, cottonseed products offer a safe alternative feed for cattle producers when fed at recommended levels. Beef producers seeking to lower production costs should consider using cotton byproducts in their feeding programs. If carefully incorporated, cotton bypro...
